Today, we are going to meditate on the Mercy Seat, which was placed on top of the Ark of the Covenant.
The high priest entered the Holy of Holies once a year, carrying the blood of a lamb, and sprinkled it on the Mercy Seat for the remission of sins.
Mainly three things happens at the Mercy Seat
- 1. God appears at the Mercy Seat
- 2. God speaks from the Mercy Seat
- 3. High Priest Interceded
God promised to appear in a cloud above the Mercy Seat. This cloud became the source of light in the Holy of Holies.
“….I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.” — Leviticus 16:2
God also spoke from the Mercy Seat, between the two cherubim, revealing His will to His people.
“There I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony…” — Exodus 25:22
The high priest interceded by entering God’s presence with blood, incense, and the names of the Israel tribes.
What does the Mercy Seat mean to us today?
In our lives, we have to hear the God Word everyday, and we must have listening hearts.
- 1. God speaks through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is God’s final and perfect revelation to us.
- 2. God speaks through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit speaks, leads, and guides us through the Word of God.
- 3. Jesus is still interceding for us today
“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son…” — Hebrews 1:1–2
“When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak…” — John 16:13
“.. It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” — Romans 8:34
“Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.” — Psalm 62:8
Prayer at Mercy Seat, Lord, give me a heart that listens to Your Word at all times and fully trusts in You. Guide my thoughts, my decisions, and my steps according to Your will. Lead me on the path You have prepared for me, and help me walk in obedience and faith.
